In Memoriam

Dottie Metcalf

Dottie has been an active member of the Talbot Retriever Club, the Woman's Field Trial Club and the Shrewsbury River Retriever Club from as early as 1952. Until this spring she had served for several years as both the secretary-treasurer and the field trial secretary for WFTC. Dottie has also served as the secretary-treasurer for both Talbot and Shrewsbury in past years.

Her achievements in and contributions to working dogs and field trials were many. She campaigned 2 AFC, 1 FC, and 6 FC-AFC Labrador Retrievers. She judged numerous field trials including the National Amateur Championship stake.

Dottie's dedication and activities resulted in her induction into the Retriever Field Trial Hall of Fame. She was also a member of the board of directors of the Bird Dog Hall of Fame and a generous supporter of that organization. In addition to her recognition by the Retriever Hall of Fame she was a recipient of the American Kennel Club's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Her interest in and concern for canine health inspired her to provide the initial funding and continued support for the Richard G. and Dorothy A Metcalf Sports Medicine Program at Auburn University. That program, headed by her friend Dr. Rob Gillett, DVM, was one of her keenest interests. She often attended the program's annual Sports Medicine Symposiums. In addition to her support of the Auburn program she endowed a professorship in Veterinary Medicine Informatics at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. She was also the Millennium Founder of the AKC Canine Health Foundation.

As an avid and accomplished horsewoman, Dottie was an active participant in both the Monmouth County Hunt Club and the Monmouth County Hunt Racing Association for which she helped to organize a yearly steeplechase race event to benefit charity. An active member of the Monmouth area's social community, she was a member of the Sea Bright Beach Club, the Rumson Country Club and the Navesink Country Club. She will also be fondly remembered as the founder of the Dorothy A. Metcalf Foundation, which continues to benefit charities of good causes.

Dottie has played a significant role in everything to do with retrievers and field trials for many years and all of us who share her love for the sport are her beneficiaries. While her awards and accolades are impressive and well deserved, it is her friendship and personal touch we will miss the most. Our lives are truly diminished by her absence.
